The ability to label emotions is a developmental skill that is not present at birth—it must be learned. Teachers play a major role in children’s ability to identify, understand, and express
emotions in a healthy way. This session presents recommended strategies that are key to fostering emotional literacy in young children. It helps teachers create an emotionally literate classroom environment by providing visuals and prompts children can use to talk about feelings and emotions, expressing and labeling children’s feelings, playing games, discovering songs, and telling stories that frequently include the use of feeling words.
